CSIRO, Cruises, Vertebrate and Invertebrate Fishery Bycatch, North Australia, 1997

Latest version published by CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere on Mar 13, 2018 CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere

Biological data collected on 3 cruises of Southern Surveyor between February 1997 and October 1998 in the Torres Strait, Gulf of Carpentaria and Arafura Sea under the leadership of John Salini. The aims were to identify all vertebrate and invertebrate bycatch species in prawn trawls in the northern prawn fishery and the Torres Strait. The data were collected for the Bycatch Sustainability Project.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 68,396 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Downloads

Download the latest version of this resource data as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A) or the resource metadata as EML or RTF:

No Description available

Title Ecological sustainability of bycatch and biodiversity in prawn trawl fisheries (FRDC project no. 96/257) 1996-2000
Funding CSIRO
Study Area Description Torres Strait, Gulf of Carpentaria, Arafura Sea (northern Australia)
Design Description The aims of the cruise were to identify all vertebrate and invertebrate bycatch species in 468 prawn trawls in the northern prawn fishery and the Torres Strait; to sort one total catch from each of nine areas (seven were successfully sampled); to sample inside and outside prawn closure areas north west of groote Eylandt; and to collect RoxAnn and EK500 acoustic data to help discriminate bottom environments, accompanied by dredge tows and abiotic samples. Sea snakes were also tested for post-trawl survival, and leiognathids (ponyfish) chemically treated for otolith marking.
